Flaxseed Oil for Acne Treatment

Among many acne sufferers flaxseed oil has become a popular natural option for the treatment and control of this skin disorder. While there have not been a great deal of studies done on the use of flaxseed oil for acne treatment, many have reported good results in good results with regular supplementation.

Flaxseed oil has long been used by many as a natural laxative, providing bulk to the stool and aiding constipation. In addition to these qualities, and of much greater importance, is the richness of flax oil in omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Dry, inflamed skin or skin that suffers from the frequent appearance of whiteheads or blackheads can benefit from supplementing with essential fatty acids in particular, the omega-3s. Essential fatty acids are responsible for skin repair, moisture content, and overall flexibility, however since the body cannot produce its own, they must be obtained through the diet.

There are 3 types of omega 3 fatty acids which are important. They are alpha linolenic acid (ALA or LNA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA in particular are the forms most easily used by the body. ALA (or LNA) may be converted into EPA and DHA by the body.

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are the most common of the essential fatty acids. The typical western diet tends to rely more heavily on omega 6 fatty acids, which are found in oils such safflower, sunflower, corn, sesame, among others. Omega 3 fatty acids may be found in fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon.

Which brings us to flaxseed oil which is an excellent natural source of alpha-linolenic acid (LNA). As noted above, LNA can be converted into omega-3 fatty acid in the body. As we know, a well balanced diet is essential to good overall health. The addition of flax oil supplementation to a well balanced diet has been noted by many to promote skin health and healing.

Flaxseed oil can be purchased inexpensively in the vitamin section of most drug stores and health stores. As there have not been a great deal of studies done, there is no standard recommendation as to the amount of supplementation.
